Completed in 1977 and known as the Reef Runway, Runway 8R/26L is the world's first major runway constructed entirely offshore and was designed ostensibly to alleviate congestion and reduce the number of direct overflights of downtown Honolulu by commercial and military aircraft. Upon its completion, the 12,000ft asphaly runway became a designated alternate landing site for the NASA space shuttle program and can easily accomodate any aircraft in the US military.
