park, historic ruins
Robert J. Forsyth, the first resident in Las Flores Canyon, founded a ranch here in the 1880s. The land changed several times before being purchased by Charles H. Cobb in 1916.
Cobb's estate built a magnificent Spanish Revival style home built in 1918. Cobb, a lifelong Mason, died in 1939 and the estate was a Masonic home, a retreat owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1942-1955, and later bought by the Marx brothers in 1960. By that time, the home had deteriorated and the Marx brothers had it razed with plans of establishing a cemetery on the grounds. The property was auctioned off in 1971 in the hopes of turning it into a housing development and instead turned into a park. All that remains of the estate are building foundations, stairways, and walls.
Nice place for a walk. The original owners planted many trees from around the world, now mostly sadly neglected. Trailhead for hikes to Mt Lowe and Mt Wilson. Watch out for snakes in moderate weather. Mountain lions and bears are also not out of the question.
