Royal Derby Hospital, (formerly Derby City General Hospital) is one of two teaching hospitals in the city of Derby, the other being the London Road Community Hospital. It is the largest teaching hospital in the East Midlands, and is one of the largest hospitals in the UK. The two hospitals are run by Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital has completed a massive rebuild, doubling the size of the buildings. This modern facility has 1139 beds, of which 30% are in single occupancy rooms, and 35 operating theatres. More than 300 consultants and 7000 nurses and other staff provide medical care for a local population of approximately 660,000 people and subspecialty populations of over one million patients. The hospitals are major teaching centres for the University of Nottingham medical school including the graduate entry medical school (which is based at the Derby City General Hospital site).
