An old mining town, one of the early centres of Australian gold mining. First mining activity in Walhalla was recorded in 1862, 11 years after the Melbourne suburb Warrandyte had become a famous gold digging place. The hamlet of Walhalla was almost deserted until the year 2,000 when large scale restoration of historic buildings started. At its peak in the 1870s there were around 2,500 inhabitants, 7 churches, 40 shops, a brewery, 10 hotels and a newspaper.
