This pseudo land-locked saline lake reaches a maximum average depth of roughly 2ft/24inches/60cm. The size of the lake can diminish in size and depth during long periods of sunny weather when the evaporation process is at its strongest. The inner lake of Cayo Sal is sea water, warm to the touch, experiencing mild evaporation throughout the year, explaining its salinity. The lake is unlikely to fully evaporate as sea water can enter the lake at sea-level by seeping in underneath the surrounding land.

The bed of this lake is topped by a hardenned red-pigment (most likely an algae top-crust), which cracks if stood on and beneath it is a fine powdery residue. Note that the edges of this lake is a breeding ground for mosquito larvae and anyone venturing in will notice numerous mosquitos attached to their legs as they wade through and leave the Cayo's lake.
