Jacob's Ladder is the longest single flight of steps on the island. It is one of Jamestown's most notable features. The long Inclined Plane is reputed to "break your heart going up and break your neck coming down". It was constructed in 1829 to connect Jamestown to the garrison on Ladder Hill, and was used to haul ammunition. It is still used today. Jacob's Ladder has 699 steps is 900 ft in length, and ascends 600 ft (183m).
Originally constructed as an inclined cableway. Reconstructed in 1871 as a staircase.
