Kurashiki Bikan (Historic District) (Kurashiki)

Don't miss this if you are in the area.
Old rice warehouses and merchants' homes--converted into museums and shops--line a lovely canal. This area dates from the Edo period, when it was an important rice-shipping port. It is especially beautiful in the evening, worth an overnight stay. The small museums are best seen first thing in the morning, before the busloads of tourists arrive. The easiest access is via the local train from the Okayama Shinkansen ("Bullet Train") station. A 10-15 minute walk from the main exit of the Kurashiki train station. The Shin-Kurashiki Shinkansen station is less convenient.
