The railway station in Retford is located on the East Coast Main Line. Trains on this route go south to London, and north to Leeds, Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh and beyond (the Hull and Leeds branches diverge to the north at Doncaster). These services call at the higher level platforms, which are directly accessible from the entrance. The lower level platforms are linked by a path the southern end of the southbound platform, and are located on the Sheffield to Lincoln (and sometimes Cleethorpes) line.
Originally, trains on the Sheffield-Lincoln line used the western loop to enter the station, before reversing out back. The Sheffield-Lincoln line crossed the East Coast main line at a flat crossing. The 1960s saw lowering the Sheffield-Lincoln line and building the existing low-level platforms.
