The Strand hotel was originally built in 1901 by Arshak Sarkies, one of the four Armenian Sarkies Brothers famous for their group of hotels in Asia. Their hotels included the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang fondly known as the E&O by many.

The Strand went through a series of colorful events throughout the 1930's which was its heyday and for ten years during the thirties it boasted a list of facilities that most other hotels didn't have including an outdoor swimming pool, billiards room, a restaurant and bar and a jewelery shop. In 1937 the building known as the Strand Annex was built on the site where the swimming pool once was and thus raising the number of rooms to 100.

After the war the hotel continued to operate under the same name. However in 1963, following the rise of the military junta, the hotel became nationalized. In 1993 the hotel was fully restored to its former glory and today features just 32 butler serviced suites in the main building while the annex block to the rear of the compound could not be restored by owners GHM for economic reasons and became an art gallery.

  • I visited the Strand hotel in February 2009 during Chinese new year holidays and the hotel is very posh but also extremely expensive with the so called suites starting at USD 550!! But although the hotel has 1. a large price tag and 2. hardly any facilities it is well worth a visit.
