Often confused with nearby St. Catherine's Hill, the observation platform (see bottom right-hand corner of rectangle) at the top of this hill offers breathtaking views of Bournemouth and the surrounding area. It's probably best to visit in winter, when the view isn't quite so obsured by tree foliage.

  • Can anyone please tell me what the foundations of the buildings left at Ramsdown Forest used to be? My Wife (Julie) and I walk the beautiful forset regulary and often wonder what they used to be? I can only imagine they were used throughout the 2nd World war but can anyone tell me what for? I have done local searches on the area but nothing crops up. Thanks
  • a lot of the support buildings and accommodation blocks were built in surrounding area, connected by single track roads the remains of which are also found at ramsdown
  • The foundations are the remains of council houses (large Nissen huts) which were lived in until 1958. I lived there until then just before my 10th birthday when the families were moved to council hoses at Moors Close at Hurn or to brand new houses at Burton
  • I think you'll find that they are old military buildings, civilians used them for some time after WW2 because of a lack of housing. The concrete square bases are the bases for search lights and Anti Aircraft guns. The hill provided an excellent position to defend both RAF Hurn and Bournemouth. The concrete paths are very similar in construction to other military bases from the early 30s.
