Sakya monastery was founded in 1072. In 13th century it was the capitol of Tibet. The southern gompa dominates the town with thick walls and watchtowers it looks more like a fort than a monastery. The monastery includes the Phuntsogpalaca, the Purkhang and the assembly hall(lakhang) said to be donated by Kublai Khan. The northern monastery is now destroyed.
