Comments

  • On July 6 2008, the stadium was the venue of a major protest organised by concerned NGOs and opposition parties, to protest the ruling government's 40% hike in petrol price. In an unprecedented move, the police for the first time tried to rope-in the army to assist the police force to manage the expected crowd. A police-army coordination exercise carried out a few days prior to the protest event was vehemently denounced by NGOs who saw the exercise as an attempt to intimidate the population from attending the protest rally.
