Once one of Paris' emblematic department stores, La Samaritaine, which had been operating at a loss since the 1970s, finally closed in 2005 because the building did not meet safety codes. Its current owners, LVMH, rebuilt it with a Cheval Blanc luxury hotel in the iconic art deco wing facing the seine, and retail and offices in the rest of the huge complex of two buildings.
