This square at the crossing of the streets Esplanade, Gorch-Fock-Wall, Dammtordamm and Dammtorstraße used to be the one with the most traffic in Hamburg. In 1922, the first electric traffic lights in Europe were installed here (it shares this title with a traffic light in Paris).

The place is named after Heinrich von Stephan (1831-1897), founder of the World Postal Union.
The long building on the south-east corner, stretching along Gorch-Fock-Wall, was the "Oberpostdirection" from 1887 into 1960s. Most of the postal affairs in Hamburg and later Northern Germany were managed from here.
