Lake Chad

Cameroon / Nord Extreme / Makari /

Lake Chad is a unique reservoir of decent size in the Sahara, but for last 40 years it has considerably reduced in size, owing to turns of droughts and a heavy use of lake for irrigation of the neighboring lands. Green areas specify its former size.

Hippopotamus, crocodiles are found in lake; the fauna of water and marsh birds is widely presented. Fishes catches in a year have totaled 100 thousand tons (end of 20th century).
