The Condado Plaza Hotel (San Juan)

Puerto Rico / San Juan / San Juan / Doctor Bailey K. Ashford Avenue, 999

The two buildings that have historically made up this resort have had an enormous number of names.

This main north wing was originally designed by architect Morris Lapidus as the Ponce de Leon Hotel and opened in 1963. It was soon after renamed the San Jeronimo Hilton, then the Helio Isla Hotel and Casino, then the Condado Holiday Inn.

The south wing was originally built in the late 1960s as the Flamboyan Hotel & Casino.

Famed high wire artist Karl Wallenda fell to his death in 1978 while attempting to walk a tightrope between the Condado Holiday Inn and the Flamboyan.

The Flamboyan closed soon after and was bought by the Condado Plaza in 1979. The two buildings were joined into one hotel connected by a skywalk over the road.

The hotel was renamed the Condado Holiday Inn Resort & Sands Casino, then the Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino in the late 1980s, then the Wyndham Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino in the 1990s.

The hotel joined the Hilton chain in 2011 as the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza Hotel , then was moved to the Hilton division in 2013 as The Condado Plaza Hilton.

In 2023, the hotels were severed again, with the main wing becoming The Condado Plaza Hotel (an independent, unbranded hotel operating within Hilton) and the smaller south wing becoming the Hilton Garden Inn San Juan Condado. The main wing is already scheduled to be renamed yet again in 2025, when it will become the San Juan Condado Plaza, Curio Collection by Hilton, following renovations.
