Peat was used as fuel from ancient times and is still used as a soil conditioner. Here, along with the Mendip stone quarries, is an example of Somerset's tendency to dig itself up and export bits. Thousands of years of archaeology are buried in the Somerset peat, including whole villages and wooden trackways. Peat extraction remains controversial.
