Bougainville and Rabaul Campaigns, 1943-44. These two now abandoned airstrips formed a staging point for air raids on Japanese held Rabaul and other points in the northern Solomons during the campaigns of 1943-1944. USMC, USN, RNZAF & RAAF units all based at the fields at one time or another. Bombers were predominately based at Piva "Uncle," the northernmost strip. Fighters based at Piva "Yoke" to the south.
