Paiwalla/Sunnyside Swamp is a remnant wetland with an area of 76.3 ha. It is located in the lower Murray River, approximately 126 km from the mouth of the Murray River, between the Barrages and Lock 1. It comprises two permanent wetland areas separated by a central dairy irrigation pasture. The northern permanent wetland section, Piawalla Swamp receives water entirely from the River Murray. The southern permanent wetland section, Sunnyside Swamp receives water entirely from the River Murray and has excess irrigation water pumped into it from the central irrigation area.

Despite having a low overall shoreline complexity, both Sunnyside and Paiwalla Swamps exhibit a diverse range of emergent and submerged aquatic vegetation. At low water level, the wetland consists.
