Goose Lake

Russia / Burjatija / Gusinoozyorsk /

Goose Lake (Russian: Гусиное озеро, Gusinoye Ozero) is the name of a fresh water lake in the Russian republic Buryatia in the southeast portion of Siberia. It is located about 120 kilometers from Ulan Ude, the capital of Buryatia and is close to the border with Mongolia. The town of Gusinoozyorsk, with its Buddhist shrines, is located on the northeastern shore of the lake.

Originally, in place of today's Gussinoosjorsk (Russian: Гусиноозёрск) there was a large Buddhist Monastery.

Here, in summer 1921, a great battle took place. It was the battle wherein the (White) Asian Cavalry Division of Baron Ungern von Sternberg (Барон Унгерн фон Штернберг) destroyed completely the 5th (Red) Soviet Army of General Wassili Konstantinowitsch Blücher (Russsian: Василий Константинович Блюхер <Vasilij Konstantinovič Bljucher>). It was one of the last victories of the White Troops.
