Gizo is the town. Ghizo is the island.

A beautiful island that was hit by a tsunami on April 2nd 2007. The whole town was destroyed and many of the residents are still living in make-shift tents even now, over a year later. The global economy crisis is stricking these areas hard. Rice was a staple for these people, but now it is unaffordable.

The spelling of Solomon Islands names is confused. Simply put, as in Fijian, there are letters in numerous Solomons languages that assume another in front, without it appearing. Some spellings use the traditional, others try to be phonetic. In the case of Gizo - this is a western spelling. The traditional spelling is Ghizo. In Solomons, "g" has an understood "n" in front in many cases. So, "ng". Same with "d" ("nd"). In some languages, "b" is understood "mb". But the "g" one is most common. So, to emphasize a hard "g", and "h" is put after it. Without it, "Gizo" would be assumed to be pronounced "Ngizo". Since it is "Ghizo", the pronunciation is "Gizo" (hard g)... Clear as mud? Anyway, the island and town are both "Ghizo" - or "Gizo" - depending on your spelling system.
