Toji was one of the first temples built in Kyoto back in 796. Its partner was Sai-ji (West Temple, with To-ji being East) which is, unfortunately, lost.

Toji boasts the tallest five-story pagoda in Japan, and hosts a flea market on the 21st of each month. Accessible on foot from Kyoto Station or Toji Station on the Kintetsu Line.
