Boliden Kokkola OY is the second largest zinc plant in Europe and 5th largest in the world. The plant produces high quality zinc metal of exceptional purity.
Kokkola imports zinc concentrate from mines in Sweden and North America. The concentrate is roasted, giving off sulphur dioxide (which is then manufactured into sulphuric acid). The resulting zinc calcine is leached in sulphuric acid to produce a zinc sulphate solution plus iron and pure sulphur. The zinc sulphate solution is purified, then the zinc metal is extracted by electrolysis onto aluminum cathodes. This zinc is then smelted in electric furnaces and cast into ingots for export to industries in Europe.
