Maus Castle

Germany / Rheinland-Pfalz / Prath /

Maus Castle (German: Burg Maus, meaning Mouse Castle) is a castle above the village of Wellmich (part of Sankt Goarshausen) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The castle received its name from the counts of Katzenelnbogen, who called it "small like a mouse" that would be eaten by the "cat" of their nearby Katz Castle upriver. Burg Maus was built in the latter half of the 14th century. It secured the border of the Archbishopric of Trier against the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, who had built nearby castles Rheinfels and Katz (the names "Katz" and "Maus" are of course popularly linked).

Restored between 1900 and 1906 and again after World War II, Burg Maus now hosts an aviary that is home to falcons and eagles.
