One of Sydney's first hospitals, originally established by the Sisters of Charity in 1836, to provide compassionate health care to Sydney's poor and impoverished inner city population of the time. The hospital enjoys a reputation as the pioneer of heart transplant surgery in Australia. It was also the first hospital in Australia to respond to the AIDS crisis, and implement a holistic approach to the care of HIV/AIDS patients.
