Shaniwar Wada (पुणे)

India / Maharashtra / Pune / पुणे

A speechless witness of rise and fall of Maratha dynasty stands here in the form of walls and the plinths of several beautiful buildings.

The construction of this beautiful palatial house was initiated by Peshwa Bajirao-I. His son Nanasaheb completed the construction and also developed Pune as a city of fine architecture, gardens, and temples.

Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj the demi-god and Hero of Maharashtra founded the Maratha empire. Peshwa, a Persian word means Prime Minister. Peshwa’s were Prime-ministers of Chattrapati Shivaji’s descendants. Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj the grandson of Shivaji, appointed Bajirao’s father ‘Balaji Vishwanath’ as his Prime-minister, in Satara.

He was succeeded by his Bajirao, a brave soldier and a daredevil fighter. Bajirao lived a glorious life of just 32 years. He is only ‘General’ in the history of India who won each and every battle, he fought. Unfortunately this young and handsome General could not win battles in his personal life.

The story of choosing this site goes a good 250 years back. On this particular spot, Bajirao was amazed to see a mother hare fighting back with hunting dogs to protect her litter.

Surrounded by deep moats this North facing palace, symbolised victory of Maratha’s over the Moguls.
