SUNY Geneseo is known for providing a highly affordable high-quality education. It has the highest four-year graduation rate of any comprehensive college in the U.S., and is tied for the highest freshman retention rate in New York State. This indicates a generally happy and dedicated student body, 40% of which also participate in Geneseo's study abroad programs. The student body is predominantly suburban and middle-class, hailing mostly from Upstate New York but increasingly so from Long Island and Westchester County.

While Geneseo does have its share of football fans and party animals, Geneseo has a reputation for having highly academic students and still does not host a football team. Nevertheless, the school is home to a number of competitive sports teams, fraternities, and sororities.

    The Geography Department is fantastic. SUNY Geneseo is a great school with an amazing sunset (one of the best in the area). The town is also nice and has history that dates back before the Civil War.
