A suburb of Brisbane. Postcode - 4171. Name and boundaries approved by Queensland Place Names Board 11 August 1975. Named around 1875 after William Baynes (1833- 1898) butcher and speculator, who purchased the area from Pollett Cardew (c.1817-1900) pastoralist and magistrate, in 1875. Baynes had lived in Hawthorn (Melbourne) before coming to Queensland in 1859. Boundary altered by the Minister for Natural Resources and Minister for Mines, 1 June 2001. Boundary amended by the Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland, 3 August 2007.
