It is the junction of South Luzon Expressway and Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA). It is named after Barangay Magallanes, where it is located and Ferdinand Magellan, who has the Spanish name of Fernando Magallanes. Ferdinand Magallanes was a Portuguese circumnavigator who was killed by Lapu-Lapu in Mactan, Cebu in 1521, one year before his journey completed.
