Capitol of Cayo District, Belize, San Ignacio is a Beautiful city of about 18,000 residents. It began as a logging community and now is home to a wide array of Belizeans. It is a stopping point for many a "off the beaten path" tourist. Plenty of cheap lodgings and great food. Check out the "Pit Pan" bar for some real punta rock. Also see the cocopele club for an interesting mix of both tourists and locals. Plus there are plenty of Mayan ruins in the area. San Ignacio makes a great home base for touring western Belize and some of Gautemala, including Tikal and the island of Flores for you more conventional tourists.
