The Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter, which employs 3,400 people, is one of the oldest smelters in East Siberia. The plant was commissioned in 1962 and is located 3 km from the town of Shelekhov, 22 km to the south west of Irkutsk. The trans-Siberian railway runs 2 km east of the facility, providing excellent transport links for all the material flows to and from the plant.
In 2007 Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter became part of UC RUSAL.

Its main products are primary aluminium, aluminium wire rod, and Silumin. The actual aluminium output in 2008 totaled 358,000 tonnes, with 97.3% being first-rate aluminium which is one of the best figures in the industry.
