Mount Garnet was built as a mining community in the 1800s and several minerals can be found in the area, including tin, copper and garnet. Some of the scars to the north of town are the old tin workings.

There is currently a Zinc Mine and also a Lime Mine operating in the town itself. Most of the surrounding areas are beef cattle properties. The township consists of a general store, bakery, post office, service station and a primary school.
