Smyrna ancient theater was one of the greatest in the Roman world (diameter 150 m).
The monument has been covered by houses during the 19th century, but in 2007 the İzmir authorities planned an archaeological project in order to start excavations on this site. These have revealed a number of architectural remains, including much of the stage and some of the searing area.
