The prestigious golf club south of Durham City. Membership rules are somewhat draconian; it has a closed policy on entry - candidates have to be recommended from within and have no right of reply if their application is rejected. If a known pro or semi pro with a very good handicap applies to join, then the rules can be somewhat relaxed, and membership is often granted without need for an interview. A request by female members for WC facilities halfway round the course has recently been the cause of heated deabte. Men, it seems, simply "go behind a tree". Strange that this is permitted, but the wearing of jeans in the clubhouse is not!

  • Whoever wrote this needs their bumps read! Nothing other than 'go behind a tree' is correct in this statement. Durham City GC has an open membership policy whether youve played golf before or not. There is a relaxed dress rule in the Clubhouse (which includes the wearing of jeans) Generally, Durham City Golf Club offers one of the least draconian stances to golf in the North East whilst still respecting the history and heritage of the game. It is forward looking and constantly seeking ways to improve its service levels to members and visitors alike. The previous author appears to be somewhat malicious if not libelous and I would suggest the next time they need to 'go' whilst on the golf course the tree they go behind is a cactus. Dont forget to stand close and lean in.
