A tiny haven on the N7, seen from the road it is set well below on a parallel service road. The main thing seen first is a welcome fuel filling station canopy. Be warned, they do not call this place Bitterfontein for nothing! It means "bitter spring". The water, though cool and crystal clear, and perfectly safe to drink, comes from a deep artesian well, and has dissolved minerals. It tastes vile, and can be likened to quinine. Visitors are advised to stay with the soft drinks from the filling station, and only use the water to cool the face.
