The residents here are mostly retired, and there are many holiday homes (called "baches" locally). A few people commute to work in Levin or Palmerston North.

The settlement takes its name from a flour mill, built in the 1850s by a French priest. The mill was a few miles inland, and was powered by a water wheel. The local Maori called it Wai (water) Tarere )flowing copiously).
