This place is said to take its name from an incident in the 1820s, when a coalition of Northern tribes led by Te Rauparaha of Ngati Toa, conquered the whole coast from the Rangitikei south to Wellington. When he arrived here the local people made their submission without fighting, saying "Your fame (mana) is enough (kau)".
A medieval-style tournament is now held here each year.
