Rieke Elementary School, located in the heart of Hillsdale, is a small public elementary school within Portland Public Schools. Between 2002 and 2006, the parents of this neighborhood school successfully resisted suggestions from Portland school administrators that it be closed. Instead, the school has proposed a plan that would expand the school's population; by September 2007, that plan had led, in part, to a nearly 20% increase in enrollment at the school over 2005.
