USS Arizona Memorial

USA / Hawaii / Aiea /
memorial, Second World War 1939-1945, military, battleship, United States Navy, war memorial, war cemetery

Dedicated in 1962 in honor of the 1,777 crewmen who lost their lives and are entombed aboard the USS Arizona from her sinking on December 7th, 1941, the USS Arizona Memorial was designed by Honolulu architect Alfred Preis to be a 184ft long structure with two peaks at either end connected by a sagging midsection. Representing the height of American pride before the war, the sudden depression of a nation after the attack and the rise of American power to new heights after the war, the building spans the sunken hull of the Battleship and contains a marble shrine inscribed with the names of the crew still entombed aboard the vessel.

Accessible only by boat, the Arizona Memorial is also composed of a shoreside visitor center which houses historical information about the attack, boat access to the memorial and general guest services.

  • Elvis Presley returned from his army stint and performed in concert at nearby base gymasium. Proceeds went to help build Arizona Memorial. He returned to the memorial on most visits to Hawaii, which was his favorite place to vacation.
