Site of Königsberg Castle, originally built by Teutonic Knights. Heavily damaged by bombing and fighting in World War II, the castle's ruins were demolished under Brezhnev's orders in 1968.
The House of the Soviets was built over many years, starting in the 1960s, and it was still incomplete when it was abandoned in the 1980s. The unfinished concrete shell has loomed over the city for years. It was painted and had windows installed for a visit by Putin in 2005, but the interior remains unfinished and has been deemed uninhabitable.
