Bermuda

Bermuda / Hamilton /
 island, British oversea territory

Is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Located off the east coast of the United States. With a total area of 53.3 km² (20.6 sq. mi.) Discovered by the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez in 1503. It was used as a Portuguese and Spanish waystation until 1609, when a flotilla of English ships bound for mainland America was wrecked off the island. The wrecked settlers claimed the island for England, and Bermuda was made part of the Virginia colony. Settlement began in 1612, making it the oldest English settlement in the New World and the oldest British overseas colony.

In 1620 Bermuda was granted limited self-governance, making its parliament the fifth oldest in the world. In the 18th and 19th centuries Bermuda became a salt and shipbuilding center. It was used as a naval station and launching off point for British attacks on the American mainland during the War of 1812. By the mid-20th century, the island was a major tourist attraction. Bermuda remains a British overseas dependency today.

The island is surrounded by a fantastic coral reef that harbors colorful fish and has ensnared scores of shipwrecks, making for memorable diving and snorkelling at spots.
