Former location of Clark Air Force Base before the US military was compelled to leave the Philippines in 1992. Now declared by government to be one of the "Special Economic Zones".
Set apart from public domain for military purposes in 1903. Originally designated Camp Stotsenberg in honor of Col. John M. Stotsenberg, 1st Nebraska Volunteers, killed in action 23 April 1899 at Quiga, Bulacan Province, Luzon. Redesignated Fort Stotsenberg on 25 February 1929.
Formerly home to the Headquarters Headquarters Battery, 12th Field Artillery Brigade from 1921 to 1922, a Detachment, Headquarters, Philippine Division from 1922 to 1941, the 9th Cavalry from 1919 to 1922, the 26th Cavalry from 1922 to 1941, the 24th Field Artillery from 1921 to 1941, the 25th Field Artillery from 1921 to 1922, and the 1st Battalion, 23rd Field Artillery from 1936 to 1941.
History: (Post-War Era)
1947 Transformation of Clark Field into Clark Air Base (Clark AB), the largest military base facility outside of mainland USA.
1979 President Ferdinand Marcos renewed the contract of the US-RP Military Bases Agreement (MBA), Philippine control over Clark was symbolized by the construction of the “Salakot” (farmer’s hat), signifying sovereignty over the base.
1991 The Philippine Senate rejected the ratification of the MBA.
June 15, 1991 Eruption of Mt Pinatubo damaged Clark.
Nov 26, 1991 The entire Clark Airbase was turned over to the Philippine government.
Oct 1, 1992 The last forces of the US Navy specifically from Subic Bay withdrew from the islands. This was a move to end the US armed forces' presence in the region.
March 13, 1992 Philippine Congress passed Republic Act 7227 known as the Bases Conversion and Development Act of 1992, forming the Bases Conversion & Development Authority (BCDA).
April 3, 1993 BCDA established Clark Development Corporation (CDC) w/c was given the responsibility of rehabilitating & developing the former Clark Air Force Base, w/c is known as Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ).
March 20, 2007 Renamed again as Clark Freeport Zone, Philippines (Clark Freeport), as mandated by Senate Bill 2260 of the 13th Congress & signed into law by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
