("Bai Tho" in English is Poem)
This bridge leads to the historical site, the carved poem of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông on the south side of Núi Bài Thơ or Bai Tho moutain (means Poem)which is 610ft (186m) high. It runs along the coast of Halong Bay , half on land and half in the sea. In the old day, sailing in the bay, one or two hundred meters from the mountain, one can see a poem carved on a flat stone cliff, but now the view is blocked with houses.
In 1468, Vietnamese Emperor Le Thanh Tong, who was also a poet, made an inspection tour of the North-East region. He stopped at the foot of the mountain, and inspired by the magnificent beauty of his surroundings, he wrote a poem. Later, he had the poem in Han characters (Vietnamese: Hán Tự, Chinese 漢字) carved on the wall of the mountain.
