Motumaire Island lies about 500m to the north of the Pahia wharf. It contains a
large recorded archaeological site, including a terraced pa, pits and
midden (NZAA Site Q05/12). The island of 3.21ha is registered under
the N.Z Historic Places Act as a wahi tapu. Along with the adjacent
Motumea Is to the north, Motumaire is owned by the Crown and
administered by the Department of Conservation. All three islands are
historic reserves. Motumea Is also contains a recorded pa
