bridge, Grade I Listed (UK)
The bridge is the town's most iconic structure, it is a Grade I listed ancient monument spanning the River Torridge, connecting the east and west parts of Bideford. The Long Bridge has 24 pointed arches, varying in span from 3.7m to 7.6m. The original Long Bridge spanning the River Torridge and connecting the East and West of the town was built out of timber in 1286. In 1925 the Long Bridge was widened to accommodate modern day traffic. Parts of the bridge were modified in the 1970s after one of the arches collapsed in 1968. The total restoration of the bridge has now been completed.
