  • East Central railway was created on 1 October,2002 with its headquarters at Hajipur when the whole of Indian Railways was reorganised into 16 zones from the earlier 9 zones(some new zones were created in early 2003). Since there was hardly any infrastructure there and railways (earstwhile Eastern Railway) had enough land in Patna near Mahendru Ghat, it was decided that the General Manager's residence would be located here.It has proved lucky as every single incumbent has gone on to become either member or Chairman, Railway board.
