power station, electric power industry / power supply
This plant was built in the late 1960s by several utilities (with NSP being the lead partner) to get the idea of what is involved in operating a nuclear power plant. By the late 1970s it had accomplished its mission and was 'mothballed' - some of the other utilities would decide to stick with Coal while NSP would go on to build the Monticello and Prairie Island nuclear plants in MN. A number of years ago, all the nuclear-specific parts were stripped and shipped to a nuclear dump in the Pacific Northwest. The remainder of the plant was rebuilt to operate on natural gas or oil and rechristened as the Angus Anson Station in honor of the late SD division chief (who perished in a plane crash with several other key SD people, including the governor at the time). This plant no longer sees regular service; only during emergency situations will it be brought back online.
