Mary International Airport is the third largest international airport in Turkmenistan. In March 2009, the airport was expanded with a new terminal and opened a US$5 million, two-story, 3,500-square-meter terminal and upgraded its status from provincial to international airport. The airport is located 6 km. north-east of the centre of Mary.
The history of Mary airport begins with its formation in 1968. In the same year, regular flights on the Ashgabat-Mary-Ashgabat route began on aircraft of the following types: LI-2, IL-14, IL-18. One of the main aircraft that was used at the airport was the an-2. an-2 aircraft operated regular flights from Mary airport on regional routes.
The new building was opened on March 4, 2009. The two-storey building with a total area of ​​about 3.5 thousand square meters was erected by a Turkish construction company. The cost was $ 5 million. The carrying capacity is 300 passengers per hour . The terminal hall has everything you need to create comfortable conditions for waiting for departure: postal and long-distance communication services, currency exchange, luggage storage, information bureaus, cafeterias, cash desks "Turkmenhowayollary" .
Two runways were built in this airport . The first runway (18L / 36R) is 2800 meters long and 45 meters wide, the second runway (18R / 36L) is 3800 meters long and 45 meters wide.
