Hakkâri (Kurdish: Colemêrg‎, Syriac: ܗܲܟܵܐܪܝ̣‎), is a Kurdish city and the capital of the Hakkâri Province of Turkey. It is located a few kilometres away from the Turkish - Iraqi border.The name Hakkâri is derived from the Syriac word, Akkare, meaning farmers. The population of the city at the 2010 census was 57,844.

History:

Up to 1915-23 Armenian genocide this was Armenian town named Julamerk or Julamerik. Historically layed in Greater Armenia's Vaspurakan province at southwest of district of Lesser Aghbak. Founded in Arsacid reighn in Armenia as fortress named Jlmar (later: Julamerk). During the Armenian genocide the city and the whole region was emptied of Armenians and Assyrians and later was settled by Kurdish people. Today's Hakkâri is a Kurdish city in the far southeast of Turkey. The name Hakkâri comes from the Aramaic Akkare (ܐܟܪ̈ܐ). Today the city has a population of 58,145 (2000 census) consisting mostly of Turks, Assyrians, and Kurds. Also, it is the capital of Hakkâri Province. Hakkâri is the site of Julamerk (also Julamerik, Çölemerik). The name was changed from Colemerg to Hakkâri when the Ottoman rulers distributed parts of the area to Kurdish elites who were part of the Hakkâri tribe and appointed several of them to rule the region.
