Narayan Hity Royal palace (Kathmandu)

Nepal / Kathmandu / Kathmandu / কাঠমান্ডু
 palace, interesting place

Narayanhity Royal Palace or Narayanhity Durbar is the home of the monarchs of Nepal. Some parts of this palace are more than 200 years old. It is the Royal Palace of the Nepali King. The Shah kings moved to this palace from their old palace in the late 18th century. This was a decade after they came out victorious with the gruesome wars with the Ranas. The old palace that still stands near the famous Durbar Square was abandoned and the new one was constructed to commemorate that victory. There were various additions in the course of time. The new edifice was inaugurated in 1970 on the occasion of the wedding of His Majesty king Birendra Bir Bikram Shahdev.

The palace witnessed a bloody massacre in the year 2000. King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah was assassinated along with 7 members of his family including Queen Aishwarya and Crown Princesses. It was alleged that Crown Prince Dipendra, who was upset with his immediate family because they unapproved the girl of his choice, carried out this massacre. He himself died after few days because of the wounds sustained during alleged "exchange of fire". Various conspiracy theories were spun later and there is no clear picture of what happened that night.

The palace takes its name from the Narayanhiti, a famous historic waterspout situated at the southern corner of the Palace. The Palace compound is immense, surrounded by high walls and guarded by soldiers. Visitors can look at the exteriors of the palace from a safe distance.

I regard this topic not as a matter of abusive debate or anything like that. The ones who has been declaring kingship is necessary for the country are likely to understand tomorrow that they were wrong. Yes, it is true that nepal has been struggling in this state of liquidity today. However, it is not due to the absence of gyanendra and the shah rule. Its because people like Mr. Nepal (who has posted comments earlier) have not tried to cope up with the situation today. I think Mr. nepal has to be progressive, okay not for us but at least for all the poor and underprevileged people of Nepal. Also, I liked the way MB dealt with the case. It doesnt matter to me if he is a maoist or not but the fact is that he is the one who is dedicated for the country. But to be a complete revolutionary, one has to ignore the disgusting and abusive words that Mr Nepal and Mr so called Prachanda are using in this site. But I am deeply interested to talk to Mr MB if possible. I have another thing to explain. This talk has been concentrated in more of a kind of racism or castism. No, this is absolutely ridiculous. None of the caste in Nepal are completely sovereign or independent. However, Nepal's thought can be agreed in one manner that the Hindu and the brahmin's have been the ultimate supressors. But it is not the general brahmins like us and the general people. It is the crowd of Brahmin's like the kings and the capitalists. Also there is a barbaric and capitalist trend in the country which is led by not only the brahmins but by newaris (in kathmandu) and even indians in many regions. Thus all of us have to lead a war against those people, not the general brahmins, chhetris, newars, madhesis or tharus. So the point of conclusion can be that prachanda, Nepal, Mb and me myself have a strong thoughts in ourselves that we refuse to reject by any means. If we creatively use these thoughts for the welfare and get into a conclusion about this by a more sensitive debate, that would be very good, isn't it ? Moreover, what would the world say if they view the wikimapia and find it so offensive and abusive about the nepalese? At least everyone of Mr. prachanda, MB, Nepal and me myself are first a strong Nepalese, aren't we ??? Please reply..

I think Torres's is in a way right. We have no right to blame others but we should look at ourselves and see what contributions we have made from our side to our nation. Its easy to blame someone but i think all the nepalese are responsible for all the happenings.Unless and until there is unity here the situation will be no good. Its a shame to realize and see that caste discrimination still exists in this century.Nepal is still a poor undeveloped country because people here are still uncivilzed, uneducated and irrational. If we dont take decisive action now we may just sink and drown. Its for us to stand and speak for our country and for justice otherwise i see a very bleak future ahead of us..so please just be yourself and try to be more reasonable people:)

Nis made a positive comment about my writing and his thoughts are also to be appreciated. Unity is to be maintained in each step at the present, which is not happening. Nepal is an underdeveloped country but with a very high potential. What we just need is unity, purity and good people. People are not actually uncivilized and irrational but because of their dissatisfaction towards something they might have appearred to be so. We have a bright future and a big misfortune, both ahead of us. Choice is ours: whether to brighten ourselves or to push ourselves to darkness. It is not the time to discuss about caste domination, not when the country is likely to be a federal republic on the basis of caste and language. Always be progressive and when time comes we have to show our potential.. that's the only way we can be better....
  • Nis (guest)
By the way i am a girl Torres as u addressed me as "he" but hehe no problem...just wanted to correct.Ya i agree to what u have said.As they say its never too late we can do it and make our country as good as others if we just work for it.People should voice their opinions and do whats right. If there is unity among us then surely I can see a happy and a bright NEPAL.
  • TORRES PREETAM (guest)
sorry to misunderstand you nis. You seem to be an individual of positive attitude towards the country. Our people have got to unite themselves and make our country better. Now after we have become a republic it is the first and foremost duty of every individual to prevent the country from any regression. We don't want a bihari gadatantra and its our job to do now. People have to lead the situation. It is not fair, additionally when the country is a republic, to expect the leaders to do everything for the nation. I respect every comments. I have to admit that I m going abroad for my studies and when i return I want this country in the hands of the progressive people. I hate bribery and corruption. I would like this to discuss this openly. Anybody is welcome in my yahoo adress: it is 'preetamconfuse' at yahoo. LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF NEPAL...
  • mb (guest)
For the clearification, mb does not stand for mawo badi as many readers presumed.......it is my short name. I m neither a maoist nor a monarchist but I am a simple Nepali who wants peace and prosperity in the Country. I hate its people who make or try to subordiante a single caste without knowing the reality.........God bless Nepal.
